This was the best trip of my life. R. Heller

This retreat will take place on the Osa Peninsula in Drake Bay, Costa Rica.

February 24th-March 3rd, 2010.

Dolphins? drums? What is going on here?

Why do dolphins and whales respond to the drums?

My experience has been that animals respond to our energetic level. Interspecies communication using rhythm is really unique and profound. Add the attitude of gratitude and you have a recipe for bliss.

Language is the mode of communication that we humans use most as well as body language etc. Music and rhythm are a universal language so it makes logical sense that it is a perfect bridge to communicate on a deeper level to other species. After all it is really our energetic level that conveys so much more than our words.

Dolphins live in pods so they responded to our little pod of drummers. Horses are herd animals and also have a “pod” consciousness. ( re: Drumming for horses )

Our world is so rich with unexplored territory. Perhaps we should drum for the bees and ants who also have a less individualized consciousness than we do.

These wonderful, magical and joyful beings are the subject of a joint initiative between the United Nations and other organizations. The year of the dolphin campaign is a program of the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development. See the website http://www.YOD2007.org.

This is good news both for marine mammal lovers and anyone who cares about the environment. Focusing on the threat to dolphins is a perfect way to bring attention to global climate change, pollution, over-fishing and habitat loss.

For ages past, dolphins have inspired much appreciation and joy, and are often said to even lead sailors and their ships in distress to safety. Even a picture of a dolphin has the effect of eliciting a smile.

Recently I led a small group to the southern pacific coast of Costa Rica and a unique and tropical place called Drake Bay. Together on our small boat we drummed and offered our gratitude to the dolphins, whales, and turtles who make this marvelous bay their home.

More than 500 dolphins surrounded our boat, jumping in synch to our drumming. What seemed like a timeless experience, I felt in my heart that the dolphins offered their unconditional love and joy to us.

Tragically, Drake Bay, which is home to many species of dolphins and whales that travel from both hemispheres to breed and birth, is unprotected. Ocean fishing trawlers indiscriminately sweep the bay’s waters in unrestricted net fishing causing harm to dolphins and other marine mammals and turtles.

Fortunately an organization, called Vida Marina, exists that is dedicated to halting this type of destructive fishing and making Drake Bay a protected marine sanctuary. I urge you to join this effort. Contact Vida Marina at http://www.vidamarina.org.

If you are interested in hosting an event in Santa Fe or want to be kept informed of local activities, to celebrate the Year of the Dolphin, please contact me at rubystone1215@hotmail.com

Now is the time to get involved and participate in the campaign to protect dolphins and raise the awareness of our beloved brothers and sisters of the seas.

Write a letter in your local paper, blog your heart out, even organize events at schools, churches, and festivals. Make music, sing, drum, and dance for the dolphins.

We all share one blue planet and by protecting the dolphins we are helping to ensure our own survival.

I felt called earlier this week to speak with Dolphin and find out what we, as a people, need to know about the year ahead. A profound message was given to us…

“Fear and panic for those that do not understand the changes that must happen on this planet. Joy and upliftment for those that do. Many who will hear these words will understand that change, no matter how devastating in appearance, is in fact just that…an appearance…an illusion of what is really manifesting for the highest good of all. These changes are quite necessary in the evolutionary process.”

“To the wanderers we say, it is time to find your place. Decide who you are and where you want to be and then just Be. It matters not where or what that is, just know it and Be it. And then be grateful for it, and all that comes to you.”

“Abundance will flow for those who live in the truth of who they are. Be grateful for even the smallest of gifts and that feeling will transcend any feelings of lack or ‘less-than-ness’.”

“As one receives, one also must know that each has a unique gift to give the collective consciousness. We ask you for that gift now. Knowing who you are and being who you are meant to be is that gift. Be it! Now is the time to remember.”

“Know thyself, express thyself, Be thyself.”

A long time ago I shared a beachhouse in Florida with a few friends, we were all street musicians part time. So we go down to the beach one evening toting our drums and gear, girlfriends in tow, and set up a little drumming circle pretty close to the water’s edge and start drumming, and the girls start dancing. After a bit we had attracted a small crowd, everyone enjoying the scene. This pod of dolphins comes cruising right up, as close as they could get and still be swimming freely in the water, quite a few of them, a litttle under a dozen from my recollection. They all start swimming in this tight figure 8 pattern, and seemed to speed up and slow down with the intensity of the drumming level. This goes on for quite awhile and now the crowd is getting big, everyone on the beach is standing around slack jawed watching these dolphins “dance” as close to the human dancers as they can get. Eventually we stopped drumming, the dolphins immediately just swam away. I will never forget that scene, just too totally cool!

The Whale

If you read the front page story of the SF Chronicle,
you would have read about a female humpback whale
who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps
and lines.

She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused
her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of
line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line
tugging in her mouth.
A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farralone Islands
(outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help.
Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was
so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her …
a very dangerous proposition.
One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer.
They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.
When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles.
She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them,
pushed gently around-she thanked them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.
The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was
following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.
May you, and all those you love,
be so blessed and fortunate …
to be surrounded by people
who will help you get untangled
from the things that are binding you.
And, may you always know the joy
of giving and receiving gratitude.
I pass this on to you, my friend, in the same spirit.
